Living Within a Composition

Unbuilt Residential Project / Design Proposal

Artist Residence explores the idea of a home as a living composition — where architecture, art, landscape and everyday life are conceived as one.
Rather than designing a neutral backdrop for an art collection, the proposal brings together a series of contrasting spatial conditions: solid and void, weight and lightness, enclosure and openness.

A sculptural terracotta volume is suspended above an open ground plane, while concrete slabs, courtyards and framed openings establish a continuous relationship between the house and its landscape. Circular apertures and curved elements interrupt the orthogonal geometry, creating moments of surprise and framing changing views of trees, sky and water.

Inside, living, dining and kitchen spaces are conceived as an informal setting for both art and everyday objects — allowing domestic life itself to become part of the composition.

The project proposes a house not simply as a place to display art, but as a spatial framework in which art, architecture and everyday life can continually interact.

For us, conservation is not about recreating the past—it is about understanding what gives a place its identity, preserving what truly matters, and thoughtfully adapting it for the present.

Na Navee is a journey of Conservation and Adaptive Reuse, where every design decision was guided by respect for the house and its history.

This is the beginning of a series where we will share the philosophy, process, and architectural details behind the restoration of Na Navee.

Because every meaningful restoration begins by listening.

The Philosophy Behind Na Navee The Heritage
แนวคิดเบื้องหลังการฟื้นฟูบ้าน ณ นาวี

ก่อนที่ณนาวีจะกลายเป็นโครงการอนุรักษ์และฟื้นฟูอาคาร เราเริ่มต้นจากคำถามหนึ่งว่า

เราจะรักษาบ้านเก่าหลังหนึ่งไว้ได้อย่างไร โดยไม่ทำให้บ้านหยุดนิ่งอยู่กับอดีต

สำหรับSpacematter การอนุรักษ์ไม่ได้หมายถึงการเก็บทุกสิ่งไว้ให้เหมือนเดิม หรือพยายามพาอาคารย้อนกลับไปสู่ช่วงเวลาใดช่วงเวลาหนึ่งในประวัติศาสตร์

แต่คือการทำความเข้าใจสิ่งที่มีอยู่ รับฟังเรื่องราวของสถานที่ และมองหาวิธีที่อาคารจะสามารถดำเนินชีวิตต่อไปได้ในบริบทของปัจจุบัน

ณนาวีคือบ้านริมคลองอายุกว่า 120 ปี ที่ผ่านกาลเวลา ผู้คน และการเปลี่ยนแปลงมาหลายยุคสมัย แนวทางของเราจึงไม่ใช่การลบร่องรอยเหล่านั้นออก แต่เป็นการค่อย ๆ อ่านและทำความเข้าใจสิ่งที่บ้านเก็บไว้ ทั้งสถาปัตยกรรม วัสดุ ร่องรอยของการใช้งาน ความไม่สมบูรณ์ และความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างตัวบ้านกับคลอง

บางร่องรอยถูกตั้งใจเก็บไว้
บางพื้นที่ได้รับหน้าที่ใหม่

The Philosophy Behind Na Navee

Before Na Navee became a restoration project, it began with a question:

How do we preserve an old house without turning it into something frozen in time?

At Studio Spacematter, we believe that conservation is not simply about keeping everything as it was. A building survives when it can continue to be lived in, adapted, and given new meaning.

Na Navee is a 120-year-old canal-side house shaped by time, people, and layers of change. Our approach was not to return the house to one particular moment in its history, but to listen carefully to what was already there — its architecture, traces, imperfections, memories, and relationship with the canal.

Some elements were restored.
Some traces were intentionally left visible.
Some spaces were given new purposes.
And new interventions were introduced quietly, without competing with the original house.

The goal was not to make Na Navee look new again.

It was to allow the house to continue its life.

For us, conservation is not about freezing time.
It is about creating continuity.

อีกหนึ่งโปรเจกต์ที่ Spacematter ภูมิใจเป็นอย่างยิ่ง

Na Navee The Heritage คือโครงการอนุรักษ์และปรับเปลี่ยนการใช้งานบ้านประวัติศาสตร์ริมคลอง ที่ออกแบบโดย SpaceMatter ภายใต้ความเชื่อว่าการอนุรักษ์ไม่ใช่เพียงการเก็บรักษาอดีต แต่คือการทำให้สถานที่ยังคงมีชีวิตและสร้างความทรงจำบทใหม่ได้ต่อไป
