WHY WE LIKE A LITTLE LIGHT UNDER THE VANITY

It's one of those details that earns its place in more ways than one.

VISUAL LIGHTNESS
A soft glow beneath a floating vanity emphasises its form and creates a sense of space, making the cabinetry appear to float above the floor.

NIGHT-TIME COMFORT
Paired with a sensor, under-vanity lighting provides a gentle guide when someone gets up during the night, without needing to switch on the main lights. Particularly useful for younger children, it offers enough light to find their way without the sudden brightness of overhead lighting, making it easier to settle back to sleep.

AMBIENCE
Lighting can completely change how a bathroom feels. The same space that serves a practical purpose in the morning can become a softer, more relaxing retreat in the evening, with a gentle glow adding warmth and atmosphere.

FLEXIBILITY
Different lighting for different moments. Bright when you need to see clearly, soft when you want to wind down. Layering light gives you the choice, rather than asking one source to do everything.

Because sometimes, a little magic is having the light find you. ✨

For us, it's these little details that make a difference — not just to how a bathroom looks, but to how it works for you and how it feels to be in it. 💚

MORE THAN JUST A WAY THROUGH

A connection between rooms. A gallery for artwork and treasured pieces. Or simply a practical thoroughfare that keeps the home flowing.

The length and proportions of a hallway, how it's used and what it connects all influence the possibilities for its design.

Sometimes it plays a supporting role. Sometimes it becomes a feature in its own right.

A well-considered hallway makes moving through the home feel effortless, while creating opportunities to bring character and interest to the spaces in between.

NO TWO HALLWAYS THE SAME. 💚

IS WHITE REALLY JUST WHITE?

White is often thought of as simple, clean and neutral.
But white doesn't exist in isolation either.

In this kitchen, the white cabinetry combines matt and satin finishes, while the stone surfaces introduce movement through their natural veining. Light reflects differently across the various surfaces, adding subtle variation to the white palette.

The brass handles and tapware bring a warm metallic note, while timber flooring and warm under-cabinet lighting add further warmth and contrast.

Even within a predominantly white palette, the combination of finish, texture, material, light and colour shapes how the space feels.

The result is calm, but not flat.

White doesn't have to mean one uniform finish — it's what surrounds it that helps shape how we experience it.

THERE’S MORE TO EVERY SPACE THAN MEETS THE EYE

Behind every finished space are countless decisions, details and ideas that bring it all together.

We’ve been visiting recently completed projects with our photographer, capturing the materials, finishes and individual touches that make each space its own.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more of these projects — and some of the thinking behind the design choices.

We can’t wait to show you. 💚

A NEW CHAPTER FOR THIS ONEHUNGA HOME
The brief: Make room for more, without making the house bigger.

Creating an ensuite meant reworking the main bedroom and separate lounge, finding the right balance so the new layout worked as a whole.

There was more to consider than simply where everything would fit. Changes to the lounge windows meant we also needed to consider natural light and outlook requirements, ensuring the space would continue to feel comfortable and liveable.
These considerations informed both the design and the building consent drawings.

Because successful space planning isn't just about making room for something new. It's about understanding how each change affects the spaces around it and making sure everything works together.

WHY WE DON’T THINK EVERYTHING IN A KITCHEN SHOULD BE HIDDEN

For a long time, kitchen design seemed to be about making everything disappear. Appliances concealed behind cabinetry, benchtops kept clear and cupboards stretching from wall to wall.

And concealed storage absolutely has its place.

But a kitchen is more than somewhere to prepare meals. It's where we make our morning coffee, gather with friends, help with homework and spend time together at the end of the day.

So why should everything that makes it ours be hidden away?

A favourite ceramic bowl, glassware inherited from family, a collection of cookbooks or a piece of handmade pottery can bring personality and meaning to a space.

A FEW THINGS TO THINK ABOUT:

→ Choose pieces with a story. Something collected on holiday, inherited from family or made by a local artist.

→ Keep favourite things close. Cookbooks within reach, everyday glassware near the dining area, or that special coffee cup right where you need it.

→ Consider the backdrop. Open shelving, glass-fronted cabinetry and softly lit niches can each create a different setting for the things you choose to display.

→ Leave a little breathing room. A few carefully placed pieces can have more impact than filling every shelf.

After all, some of the things we use every day are also the things that make a space feel most like us. 💚

SHOES OFF, BAGS DOWN, WELCOME HOME

For some, coming home means somewhere to pause, take off your shoes and leave the day's busyness behind. For others, the entrance is an opportunity to make a statement from the moment you step inside.

A busy family might need practical places for shoes, bags and coats. Another household might prefer to make a feature of artwork, lighting or the view into the home.

How you arrive home, what you need the space to do and the feeling you want to create all influence its design.

We design around the people who use the space, because no two households are quite the same.

NO TWO ENTRANCES THE SAME. 💚

DOES BLUE REALLY FEEL CALM?

Blue is often associated with calm and tranquillity.

But colour doesn't exist in isolation.

Here, the deep navy walls create a sense of depth and enclosure, giving the bedroom a more intimate, cocooning feel.

The natural light, warm timber, patterned wallpaper and touches of teal then change the experience again.

THE COLOUR IS ONLY PART OF THE STORY.

Light, saturation, contrast, texture and the colours around it all influence how a space feels.

REMEMBER THIS HOME?

Our 2023 project was all about making better use of the existing spaces and improving the connection between indoors and out in this Onehunga bungalow.

An awkward, triangular area became a new bathroom and laundry, while the former bathroom and part of the deck were incorporated into a more connected kitchen, living and dining space.

Bi-fold doors now open onto the deck and garden, creating a stronger connection between indoors and out. We also worked on the children's bedroom, adding a wardrobe to make the room work for a growing family.

Each change had its own purpose, but together they helped the home work better as a whole.

That was the first chapter.

We've recently returned to this home, where a new wish list presented us with another space-planning challenge.

A new space to fit in. A new design challenge to solve. We'll share the solution soon. 💚

A LITTLE PROFESSIONAL MILESTONE 💚

I’m pleased to share that I’ve been recognised as a Platinum Designer of NKBA for 2026.

But what does that actually mean?

The National Kitchen & Bathroom Association (NKBA) is the professional organisation representing kitchen and bathroom designers and related industry professionals across New Zealand and Australia.

Its Designers of NKBA tiering recognises individual designers based on industry experience, qualifications and ongoing professional development.

Platinum is the fourth of NKBA’s five designer tiers, with Elite being the highest.

For me, the recognition is less about the title and more about what sits behind it.

More than 20 years working in design.
Qualifications built along the way.
Continued professional development.
And a career spent learning how to make spaces work better for the people who use them.

That experience is something I bring to every project at Spin Design — from the bigger decisions about how a home works and flows, right through to the details that make it feel like yours.

It’s lovely to have that journey recognised. 💚
