Soul Cakes for Samhain

In celebration of Samhain, we invited cult food writer and cook Jago Rackham () to create a special recipe for soul cakes. Traditionally made for the soulers who went singing door to door on Samhain night, soul cakes are rather like shortbread, spiced with nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger, and studded with currants.

Inspired by our Samhain fragrance, Jago has used marmalade, blackcurrant leaves and tonka bean in his recipe.

You’ll need:
150g unsalted butter
4 tsp dried blackcurrant leaves
120g caster sugar
4 egg yolks
1 tonka bean, grated
2 tsp orange marmalade
1 tsp grenadine
300g plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
4 tbsp milk
10 drops orange bitters

1. Melt the butter with the blackcurrant leaves, infuse for 10 minutes, then strain and cool until soft.
2. Cream with the sugar, then beat in two yolks, the tonka, marmalade and grenadine.
3. Fold in the flour, baking powder and salt, then the milk, to make a firm dough.
4. Press into greased moulds and score a pentagram on top.Brush with the other two yolks beaten with the bitters.
5. Bake at 180°C for 15 minutes, glazing again halfway, then cool before turning out.

Samhain • Permanent Collection

Tonight is Samhain, when the veil between worlds wears fine as a spiderweb. The violet dusk whispers of other worlds. A souler girl makes her way through the forest - the scents of these charged hours eddying around her. We invite you to follow in her wake…

To celebrate this ancient festival, we are making a limited batch of our Samhain fragrance, part of our Permanent Collection, available to non-ledger members for just one week.

A perfume of fallen fig, blackcurrant bud and richly textured orris, Samhain is a deep burgundy with honeyed highlights of neroli and jasmine, centred on our unique, all-natural fig leaf accord.

Jack-o’-lanterns • Samhain

For Samhain, the Celtic ancestor of Halloween, many of you will be carving a pumpkin to leave outside your door.

But did you know that pumpkins have a Celtic ancestor too?

The humble turnip.

Making an autumn charm

Autumn here in Somerset is settling into its accustomed routine of sunshine, showers, misty mornings and starlit early evenings.

The hedgerows and trees are bursting with colour, and a lovely thing to do to feel connected to the season’s bounty is to bring some of it indoors - this video suggests how to make an autumn charm to hang in your house.

When foraging, only take what you need, and identify plants and fungi carefully before bringing them into your home 🍄‍🟫

Shambles • Autumn 26

Inspired by the late, great Terry Pratchett, we created a shambles - a collection of everyday found objects, made into a charm that can be tweaked and rearranged until clarity comes, and magic becomes visible.

In essence, a shambles is a way of clearing the mind, helping one see beyond the ordinary. We loved looking through it at the moors, our eyes catching a particular colour of heather or an interesting cloud sailing above.

You can read more about shambles in Pratchett’s Tiffany Aching series 📚✨

The language of flowers • Autumn 26

Floriography, the assigning of meaning to different flowers, became a popular pastime among the Victorians - a violet pinned to a blouse could signal faithfulness to a lover, while a posy of pelargoniums might signify true friendship.

In a buttoned-up age, floriography allowed people to express themselves in ways they might not be able to otherwise. A carefully chosen buttonhole was often used among the q***r community to signal pride in their identities, at a time when it was not possible to live openly.

In perfumery, we use flowers for their scents, but it can be enriching to consider what meaning they bring to a fragrance. Swipe through to explore the floriographical meanings behind Autumn 26.
