From Cluttered to Considered | A Mudroom Transformation

For this busy family of four, the mudroom had become a catch-all for coats, shoes, backpacks, laundry, and everything in between.

The challenge? Creating a space that could accommodate the demands of everyday family life while bringing a sense of calm and organization to one of the hardest-working areas of the home.

Our solution was a thoughtfully designed renovation featuring floor-to-ceiling custom cabinetry, concealed storage, a built-in bench, and designated spaces for everyday essentials.

The result? A beautifully organized mudroom where everything has its place, visual clutter is minimized, and daily routines become a little easier.

**Because great design isn't just about creating beautiful spaces. It's about creating spaces that work beautifully for the people who live in them.**

Thinking about transforming an underutilized space in your home? Let's talk about what's possible.

BATHROOM RENOVATION

A Home with a Story. A Bathroom with Soul

One of the things I love most about interior design and renovating, is that no two homes — or homeowners — are quite alike.

We recently completed this bathroom renovation for a wonderful client who has spent years lovingly creating a home filled with warmth, character and meaningful details.

From the very beginning, it was important that her new bathroom felt like a natural extension of the home she had so thoughtfully curated. This wasn't about following the latest trends or creating something entirely different. It was about honouring her personal style while bringing new life to a space that needed updating.

Through our design consultation, we explored a rich, moody colour palette, warm wood tones, a hammered copper sink, brass accents and almond-coloured fixtures in place of traditional bright white. We also discussed the importance of finding flooring that would complement the distinctive multicoloured slate already present in her home.

Armed with that direction, our client took great pleasure in sourcing her own finishes and fixtures, including refinishing a beautiful dresser in a warm walnut tone to serve as her bathroom vanity.

Gilbert then brought the renovation together through his craftsmanship and attention to detail.

The result is a cozy, richly layered bathroom filled with personality, warmth and a wonderful sense of nostalgia.

And the best part? **Our client absolutely loves it.**

To me, that's what thoughtful design is really about. Not creating a space that looks like everyone else's, but creating one that feels unmistakably like home.

At Total Home, we believe beautiful renovations begin with understanding the people who live in them.

CREATIVE CABINETRY DESIGN

Sometimes it’s the space you’re not using that makes all the difference.

One of several changes I designed for this kitchen was addressing the open space above the existing cabinetry.

Rather than replacing perfectly functional cabinets, we had custom upper cabinets made to fill the gap between the existing cabinetry and the ceiling.

Glass-front doors were used across the main run to keep the additional cabinetry feeling lighter and more open, with interior lighting adding a soft layer of ambience in the evening.

Beside the window, the design needed a slightly different solution.

Here, I chose a solid-door upper cabinet and extended the cabinetry down to the counter with an appliance garage. This gave us practical concealed storage, but just as importantly, it added the visual weight needed to balance this side of the kitchen.

The result is cabinetry that feels taller, more intentional and more integrated with the architecture of the room — without replacing everything that was already there.

Good design isn’t always about starting over. Sometimes it’s about seeing the potential in what you already have.

TRADE QUOTES
| Are you really comparing apples to apples?

When you're gathering quotes for a renovation, having a clear scope of work is incredibly important.

If Contractor A is given one version of the project, Contractor B is given slightly different information, and Contractor C has made assumptions to fill in the blanks based on their understanding, the three prices you receive may look vastly different.

But that doesn't necessarily mean one contractor is more or less expensive.

Each may simply be quoting their own understanding of the project.

This becomes even more important when the design direction hasn't been established, or when you make changes to the scope based on discussions after each trade site visit.

A preliminary quote based on standard cabinetry, basic lighting and keeping the existing layout can change considerably if the final design includes custom cabinetry, relocated electrical or plumbing, structural changes, upgraded finishes or more detailed mill-work.

The scope changed — so naturally, the price changed too.

Before requesting quotes, establish as much of the project as reasonably possible and provide each trade or contractor with the same information, drawings, specifications and expectations.

Then, when the quotes come back, you can make a much more meaningful comparison.

A good renovation budget starts with a good plan.

WHAT YOU DON'T SEE MATTERS

It's easy to look at a finished kitchen and focus on the cabinetry, counter-tops, back-splash and all those beautiful finishing details.

But this kitchen transformation involved so much more.

We completely gutted the existing kitchen and re-imagined how the space could function. The original corner walk-in pantry was removed to gain valuable space, the central island was enlarged and straightened, and the standard-height door leading to the laundry room was replaced with a custom 8' pocket door — a detail that helps draw the eye upward and accentuate the ceiling height.

From there, the kitchen was rebuilt from the inside out.

As a design-build company, this is where we believe there is a real advantage to having design and construction working together. The layout, cabinetry, electrical, mechanical requirements, materials and finishing details are considered as parts of one complete design — not individual decisions made along the way at random.

And then comes what you *do* see: a fully custom kitchen designed specifically for this home and the people who live in it.

Beautiful finishes matter.

But so does everything it took to get there.

That's the difference thoughtful design and quality craftsmanship can make.

Furniture shopping can be exciting—but with so many styles, sizes, fabrics and finishes to choose from, it can also become overwhelming very quickly.

Showroom shopping with a designer helps take the guesswork out of those decisions.

Together, we can consider the right scale and proportions for your room, coordinate colours and fabrics, think through comfort and function, and make sure each piece works with the overall look and feel you want for your home.

The goal isn’t simply to find beautiful furniture. It’s to create a room that feels comfortable, cohesive and uniquely yours.

D E S I G N | D E C I S I O N S

One of the biggest mistakes we see when homeowners are making design decisions?

**Choosing each item individually instead of looking at the room as a whole.**

People often know what they like but it's executing the full plan that can sometimes trip them up.

| You might love the flooring.

| Love the countertop.

| Love the backsplash.

| Love the cabinet colour.

But that doesn't necessarily mean they'll love each other.

Good design isn't about finding the prettiest individual pieces. It's about creating a relationship between colour, undertones, scale, texture and materials so the finished room feels intentional.

This is one of the reasons we encourage our clients to look at their selections **together** before making final decisions.

Sometimes the back-splash you loved on its own isn't the right back-splash once it's sitting beside your counter-top, wall colour of window treatments.

And that's okay.

The goal isn't to choose beautiful things.

**It's to create a beautiful room.**

🌱 Styling Tip
Always view permanent finishes together — and whenever possible, look at them in the actual room and its natural light before committing.

Did you know that some of Benjamin Moore's most beloved paint colours were inspired by 18th and 19th century North American architecture?

As an interior designer, I often find myself reaching for colours from the Historical Collection because they have a quiet confidence that never seems to go out of style. They're rich without feeling overpowering, timeless without feeling dated, and they work beautifully in both traditional and modern homes.

A few long-time favourites include:
• Hale Navy HC-154
• Revere Pewter HC-172
• Edgecomb Gray HC-173
• Saybrook Sage HC-114
• Essex Green HC-188

These colours have remained designer favourites for decades because they're inspired by heritage architecture rather than passing trends. Benjamin Moore's Historical Collection now includes 191 colours that continue to be among the company's most enduring shades.

When choosing paint, I always encourage clients to think beyond what's currently trending. The best colour is the one you'll still love years from now.

Which historical Benjamin Moore colour is your favourite?
